Like every golfer except our National Director of Marketing (who attended Saturday and Sunday at Torrey Pines but had to come back to his office in Phoenix on Monday, resulting in his sequestering of himself in his office with at "don't tell me the outcome!" sign on his door all day, so he could TiVo and watch it at home that night), I was in tune with the events of yesterday’s US Open playoff. I didn’t want to write the Blog before the final results, so here we are a day later than normal. Tiger is no doubt a great player, but man did he get some breaks. The difference between Tiger and most of the other players is that Tiger takes advantage of his breaks. Saturday’s eagle on 13 would have been played from someone’s front yard if he hit that shot at Trilogy Golf Club. He hit it so far right that all the grass he was in was dead and trampled down. The better you are, sometimes the luckier you are. I tip my cap to Tiger, winning despite the pain in his knee (Tiger, I’ve known that pain for 30 years!). He was the best player in the field and ended up as the one holding the Trophy.

This year’s US Open had a little different feel for me because of Anthony Kim. For those of you who regularly read my Blog, you know that Anthony is a close family friend. I spent Saturday and Sunday following Anthony.

We had dinner Saturday night and had a great time. It's funny that now the tables are reversed and he is the one pulling out the wallet to pay for dinner. An even par weekend moved Anthony from 65th to 29th in the final standings. I'll try not to be biased here, but I guarantee you that no one hit the ball better than Anthony. It wasn’t that his putter was bulky; it was just that the putts were not falling. Anthony was in great position for much of the week. In the two days I watched him he didn’t make a single putt over 15 feet. How many putts did Tiger make over 15 feet?

Torrey Pines was great, the weather was fantastic, and by and large the crowds were very manageable. Obviously there were times where we were being herded like cows to slaughter - in fact on Sunday we got caught in the Tiger wave trying to watch Anthony play 18 as Tiger was moving to 9. It literally took us 25 minutes to get thru!

I can say I was 30 yards from the green when Tiger made his birdie putt to move into the playoff with Rocco. Unfortunately I was behind a human wall that was literally 8 deep.

Yesterday’s finish was the crown jewel of what was a fantastic tournament. My hat is off to the USGA, the people of San Diego, and all the volunteers, who put on a great event.

I would like to recognize our Assistant Superintendent Tom Becker. Tom took vacation time to be a volunteer on the Maintenance Crew for the US Open. Vacation for Tom meant getting up at 4 am and getting to bed at 9 pm every night. We are proud of Tom and his dedication to his craft. Tom my friend, well done!

Chef Roy and the team members put on a great Father’s Day feast. The clubhouse was full and alive with music from the Evaro Brothers. Thanks to you folks who continue to support our restaurant. This week we have two events on schedule. Friday Night will be an all you can eat Pizza and Salad Bar and Saturday will be a Cookout. To find out more click here.

Men’s Club continues to be very active with over 40 players every Monday. Ladies League and the 9 hole ladies groups are still going strong on their Tuesday mornings.
